Herschel, a German Shepherd, had a rough start in life. For the first five years, he was chained up in a backyard, surrounded by dirt and isolation. Desperate for freedom, he even tried chewing through his metal chain, wearing down his teeth in the process.

Fortunately, his owner eventually made the right choice and surrendered him to Michelson Found Animals, a rescue organization dedicated to giving animals a second chance. There, Herschel received the medical care and attention he desperately needed.
Despite finally being free, Herschel faced another challenge—finding a forever home. Over the next six months, he was adopted multiple times but always returned. Having spent most of his life in confinement with little human interaction, adjusting to new environments was difficult for him.
Determined to find Herschel a loving home, Michelson Found Animals reached out to Rocky Kanaka, host of Dog’s Day Out, a show that gives rescue dogs a special day filled with joy. Rocky treated Herschel to a fun-filled adventure, complete with delicious treats, including a special doggy cupcake. Herschel even got to experience snow for the first time—and he loved it!

One of the show’s viewers instantly fell in love with Herschel and wanted to give him a permanent home in Los Angeles. Rocky gladly took Herschel on a road trip to meet his new family.

Along the way, Rocky made a special stop at the beach so Herschel could see the ocean for the first time in his life. As soon as his paws touched the sand, Herschel couldn’t contain his excitement—he barked, jumped around, and ran toward the waves, completely mesmerized by the vast, endless water. Seeing his pure joy brought a huge smile to Rocky’s face.
Now, Herschel is living happily with his new mom in Los Angeles, where he can visit the beach as often as he wants. After enduring years of neglect, he finally has the freedom, love, and happiness he always deserved.
