A couple was driving through Fresno, California, when they noticed a dog lying in a ditch by the road. Curious and concerned, they pulled over to check on her. To their surprise, she wasn’t alone—she was protecting her tiny newborn puppy.
Since they were just passing through, the couple couldn’t take the dogs with them. Instead, they left some blankets and food to keep them warm and called a local animal rescue for help. The rescue team quickly reached out to Fresno Humane Animal Services.
Priscilla Wolcott, an animal control officer, arrived as soon as she could. At first, she couldn’t spot the dogs and worried they had moved or hidden. Then, she saw the mother dog’s head peek out from the ditch, her little pup nestled beside her.
“The puppy was really cold because it had rained all night before,” Wolcott told The Dodo.
Wolcott searched the area to make sure there weren’t more puppies in need of help. Once she confirmed it was just the mother and her pup, she prepared to rescue them. She didn’t know how the mother dog would react—some strays are scared of people. But to her relief, this mama was gentle and trusting, as if she had been waiting for someone to save them.
“She just seemed ready for help,” Wolcott said.
Fresno Humane Animal Services contacted their rescue partners, hoping to find a safe place for the dogs. Within hours, Friends of the Tracy Animal Shelter sent a foster family to take them in.
“I’m so glad she made it,” Wolcott said. “She had been surviving on the side of the road, doing everything she could to protect her baby. Despite everything, her little pup was well-fed and healthy. She was such a good mom.”
The rescue named them Momma Maisie and Oreo. At first, both were struggling. Momma Maisie was extremely thin and had parasites, while tiny Oreo was so young she had to be tube-fed around the clock.
But after a few weeks in foster care, their transformation was amazing. Oreo grew into a strong, playful puppy, now weighing over seven pounds. Momma Maisie also gained weight and became healthier, thanks to a high-protein diet.
In a few weeks, Oreo will be old enough for spaying, and soon after, both she and Momma Maisie will be ready for adoption. What started as a heartbreaking situation ended with a fresh start in a loving home—the happy ending they both deserved.
