Paralyzed Pup Left Behind with Diapers and a Heartbreaking Note

Adopting a paralyzed pet isn’t a decision to take lightly—it comes with unique challenges and responsibilities. But for those who are willing to open their hearts, it can be one of the most rewarding experiences imaginable.

Sadly, many pets with disabilities are abandoned, left behind by those unwilling or unable to care for them. Lunita was one of those dogs.

In May 2014, in the quiet early hours of the morning, Lunita was found alone on a sidewalk in Salta, Argentina. A medium-sized dog with a sweet face and paralyzed hind legs, she had been left there with a worn-out wheelchair and a note. The note included her name, her age, and a short explanation: her owner could no longer care for her. No food, no water—just a heartbreaking goodbye.

A dog grooming employee spotted Lunita lying helplessly and immediately called LUBA Salta, a local animal rescue group. Within hours, two volunteers arrived to help. Lunita was brought to safety and placed in a shelter. Shortly after, she found temporary refuge in a foster home, as rescuers posted her story online, hoping someone would give her the love she deserved.

At first, there were no takers. But then, a family in the United States expressed interest. A fundraiser was organized to cover the costs of bringing Lunita overseas.

Sadly, her first home in the U.S. didn’t turn out to be the haven she needed. Due to a lack of knowledge and preparation, her care suffered. She was exposed to unsanitary conditions, including a mite-infested bed, which led to a severe staph infection.

Her condition worsened—Lunita became underweight, suffered from a painful urinary tract infection, lost all her fur from the waist down, and had to endure unbearable discomfort. Her cries during routine cleanings were heartbreaking.

But Lunita’s story didn’t end there. She was rescued again, this time by a family who knew how to care for a dog with special needs—and who loved her deeply. With time, medical treatment, and unwavering compassion, Lunita healed.

She thrived in her new home. She saw snow for the first time, traveled, made furry friends, and celebrated birthdays like any other beloved pet. On June 15, 2018, Lunita turned 11. Surrounded by people and dogs who adored her, she enjoyed a party complete with a dog-friendly cake and all the attention she could dream of.

Sadly, just weeks later, Lunita fell gravely ill. Her breathing deteriorated, and even with oxygen support, her condition worsened. When her tongue began turning blue each time the oxygen was removed, her family made the heartbreaking decision to let her go peacefully.

Lunita passed away surrounded by love—by people who cherished her for who she was, not what she lacked.

“I will never forget her and how much she meant to me,” her adoptive mom shared on Facebook. “She changed my life forever. I loved her so much.”

Though Lunita’s life began with hardship, it ended with joy, dignity, and immense love. Her story is a powerful reminder that even the most broken souls can thrive when given a chance.

Let Lunita’s journey inspire you to believe in second chances, to embrace empathy, and to understand that love knows no limits.

Rest in peace, sweet Lunita. You were—and always will be—an extraordinary soul.

Share her story to honor her memory and to spread awareness about the beauty of adopting special needs animals.
