My MIL Demanded $600 for Walking & Feeding Our Dog While I Was in Labor – I Agreed, but Only on One Condition

When I returned home from the hospital with my newborn, the last thing I expected was to find a note waiting on the kitchen table. At first, I thought it might be a sweet card from my mother-in-law, Abigail, welcoming our baby into the world. Instead, my heart sank when I realized it was a bill—an invoice for $600—for looking after our dog, Rich, while I was in labor.

Abigail had offered to care for him, never once hinting at money. To be hit with a charge after one of the most exhausting and emotional moments of my life felt like a slap in the face. Jake, my husband, told me he would deal with it, but I had a better idea.

A few days later, Abigail came over to meet her grandson. The moment she walked in, she casually asked if we had her payment ready. That’s when I smiled, pulled out my own “invoice,” and handed it to her. I had carefully listed every ride, errand, and favor Jake and I had done for her over the years—amounting to well over $600.

Her jaw dropped. Without a word, she snatched up her things and stormed out. Jake couldn’t stop laughing, completely supportive of my response.

After all, family is supposed to help one another out of love, not for profit. As for that $600? Abigail won’t be seeing it—now or ever.
