Abandoned Dog Discovered with ‘Free’ and ‘Good Home Wanted’ Scribbled on Her Body

A 5-month-old puppy with the words “free” and “good home only” written on her fur has finally found a loving family.

On May 24, officers were called to Yuktangi Park after someone found an abandoned puppy left in a box. The dog was taken to the Ross County Humane Society, where she was named Marvella—meaning “a marvelous miracle.”

Less than a week later, Marvella was adopted by a caring family from Chillicothe. The shelter received nearly 90 adoption requests from people all over the country, eager to give her a safe and loving home.

When Marvella arrived at the shelter, staff gave her a bath to remove as much of the writing as possible. She was also given vaccinations, treats, and plenty of affection.

Jane Thomas, the director of the Ross County Humane Society, hopes this case will remind people that abandoning pets is never the answer. Every year, the shelter takes in over 1,200 dogs, many of whom are lucky to find help. Unfortunately, dogs given away for free online often end up in dangerous situations, such as dogfighting rings or medical experiments.

Thomas emphasized that there are always better options for pet owners who can no longer care for their animals. Though finding a solution may take time, it’s always worth it to ensure a pet’s safety.

Marvella’s story is a reminder of the importance of animal shelters and rescue organizations. If you want to help, consider adopting, fostering, or donating to your local humane society. Every small act of kindness can make a huge difference in a pet’s life.
