She Feared the Dog She Adopted — But Took Him Home Anyway

A rescue organization in Mississippi struggled to find the right home for a stray dog named Tater Tot. With a mysterious past, he came with more than a few challenges—he was severely underweight, tested positive for heartworm, and bore a scar on his leg where fur would never grow back.

Several potential adopters had shown interest, only to back out. Things weren’t looking great for Tater Tot—until Caitlyn stepped into the picture.

Initially, Caitlyn didn’t plan on keeping the dog for herself. She was adopting him on behalf of a close friend who was preparing for Navy training. The plan was for the two of them to move to Florida together, and Tater Tot would be her friend’s companion.

But when Caitlyn met the pup, she was taken aback by his size and rugged appearance. He seemed intimidating at first. Then something unexpected happened—Tater Tot walked right up to her, leaned into her legs, and plopped into her lap, like he’d made his choice. That was the moment everything changed.

Though the Florida plans eventually fell through, Caitlyn knew she couldn’t part with him. She chose to keep Tater Tot and welcomed him into her life—and heart.

In the beginning, he was terrified of almost everything. Loud noises, raised voices, or even Caitlyn picking up large objects would send him running or flinching. These reactions hinted at a possible history of mistreatment. But with time, patience, and love, Tater Tot slowly began to trust again.

As he settled in, his silly, lovable personality started to shine. Caitlyn’s mom even joked that he’d learned how to roll his eyes. Now weighing in at a healthy 60 pounds, he enjoys lounging right on top of Caitlyn whenever he can.

Tater Tot still waits excitedly at the front door for his daily walk, although they’ve stopped going to dog parks. At first, other dog owners often left when they saw him, assuming he was aggressive based on his appearance. It was disheartening, but Caitlyn never let that get between them.

Their bond deepened with time. Tater Tot became incredibly sensitive to Caitlyn’s emotions. If she was upset or crying, he’d react by hiding or looking worried. His empathy was undeniable.

When Caitlyn moved to a new home, she made a special effort to find a place with carpet because Tater Tot still avoids tile and hardwood floors. She wanted him to feel completely safe and comfortable.

Eventually, Caitlyn also adopted a second dog named Sweet Pea. Thought to be a former breeding dog, Sweet Pea now enjoys a life filled with comfort and love. She and Tater Tot have grown inseparable—often curled up next to each other, napping or playing. Neither likes being away from the other for too long.

Tater Tot transformed Caitlyn’s life in a way she never expected. From a scared, scarred stray to a loyal, loving companion, he brought joy, healing, and laughter into her world. Caitlyn says she couldn’t imagine her life without him—and she doesn’t plan to.
