Two unique dogs have built a strong and heartwarming friendship after being adopted by the same loving family.
Picasso and Newt, both with facial deformities, live with Liesl Wilhardt, the 53-year-old founder and director of Luvable Dog Rescue, on her beautiful 55-acre property in Eugene, Oregon. Liesl adopted Picasso in 2017 after the loss of his brother, Pablo. Newt joined the family in 2021, and since then, the two dogs have become inseparable companions, according to Liesl.
Picasso, now five years old, was born with a condition called wrymouth, which caused his jaw to grow unevenly. This gave his face a crooked look, reminiscent of artwork by Pablo Picasso, which inspired his name. While the condition doesn’t cause pain, it made eating as a puppy difficult and lowered his chances of being adopted.
Newt, on the other hand, is just one year old and lost his upper jaw in a traumatic accident with his mother, who bit him. Despite this severe injury, Newt has adapted remarkably well.
Liesl shared, “It was a miracle that Picasso survived as a puppy because it was hard for him to even nurse. But now, both Picasso and Newt are thriving.”
These two remarkable dogs live joyful lives despite their challenges. “Picasso and Newt absolutely love people,” Liesl said. “They’re very outgoing and love to greet everyone they meet. Most people do a double-take when they see them and take a moment to process their unique appearances.”
Liesl also shared how close the two have become. “Newt has a playful and sweet nature. He loves wrestling and having fun. Their bond has grown deeper as Newt matured. I love them both with all my heart. They’re incredibly smart, happy, and affectionate.”
Through videos and social media, Liesl gives her followers a glimpse into their daily lives. Whether it’s playing, hiking, or picking berries together, Picasso and Newt enjoy every moment. Picasso even has his own Instagram account with nearly 400,000 followers, where fans can see his adventures.
Liesl described Picasso as a “very special dog with an amazing temperament.” She explained that Picasso is a certified therapy dog and serves as an ambassador for Luvable Dog Rescue. “He spends his days helping people with disabilities or illnesses, and I fell in love with him the moment I saw him,” Liesl said. “He’s had a tough life, but I want the rest of his journey to be nothing short of amazing.”
