On a freezing January day in East Saint Louis, a brown and white pit bull wandered through the neighborhood, searching for warmth. Desperate and shivering, he stopped at the back door of a home, whining for help. A security camera recorded the heartbreaking moment as he paced the patio, hoping someone would let him in.
Thankfully, two teenage girls inside the house heard his cries. They quickly opened the garage door, giving him a safe place to warm up while they called for help.
The dog, later named Adobe, had been spotted roaming the area for days. Jill Henke, the operations director at Gateway Pet Guardians, explained that many neighbors had seen him but couldn’t get close. Volunteers even set up a humane trap, hoping to rescue him before the cold became too much.

Adobe was wearing a good-quality harness and collar, suggesting he once had a family. But without an ID tag or microchip, there was no way to find his home.
Once at the shelter, Adobe was given time to recover. The staff had never seen a dog so shaken by the cold, but as soon as he warmed up, he showed how grateful he was.

“He has settled in nicely and has quickly become a shelter favorite,” Henke said.
More than two weeks have passed, and no one has come forward to claim him. Every day, Adobe gets more comfortable, showing off his playful and loving personality. He enjoys being around people and loves treats, making him a favorite among staff and volunteers.
“Adobe is super sweet but a little shy with new people,” Henke shared. “Once he warms up, he’s silly and loves being around his humans. He also enjoys playing with other dogs.”
Now, Adobe is looking for a foster or adoptive family who can give him the love and security he deserves. Henke believes he would do well in most homes, especially with another dog or even kids.
One thing is certain—when Adobe finds his forever home, he will never have to face the cold alone again.
