When a family in New York came across a frail stray dog struggling to survive on the streets, they didn’t hesitate to help. The poor pup was clearly in distress—his skin was raw and irritated, his nails had grown wildly out of control, and every step seemed to bring him pain.
They gave him food, comfort, and a safe place to rest, but it soon became clear that he needed much more than they could provide. Wanting the best for him, they reached out to AMA Animal Rescue, who immediately stepped in.

“When we first laid eyes on him, it was obvious he was in terrible shape,” recalled Mariya Vlasova, cofounder of AMA Animal Rescue. “He was covered in a severe skin infection, barely able to stand from the inflammation in his paws, and absolutely terrified of people.”
The team didn’t think twice. They named the sweet dog Choco and rushed him to the vet for urgent care. His condition was critical, so instead of placing him in a foster home right away, he remained under veterinary supervision to get the intensive treatment he needed. Thanks to generous support from the 15/10 Foundation, Choco was able to stay at the clinic for as long as necessary.

Under the care of compassionate veterinarians, Choco received antibiotics and soothing medicated baths multiple times a week. Gradually, the painful redness on his paws faded, and he began to walk—and then run—without discomfort.
“As his body healed, his spirit started to shine through,” Vlasova shared. “It was like watching a completely different dog come to life.”

With every passing day, Choco became more relaxed and affectionate. The fear that once defined him gave way to trust, especially with those he saw regularly at the clinic.
“He began letting people handle him without hesitation,” said Vlasova. “To witness that shift—from fear to trust—was truly moving.”
When Choco was finally ready to leave the clinic, fate had already chosen the perfect home for him. One of the receptionists at the vet clinic had bonded with him from day one and volunteered to foster him. What started as a temporary arrangement quickly blossomed into something much deeper.

In his new home, Choco flourished. He bonded with his foster mom’s dog, adapted to his new surroundings, and even returned to the clinic regularly—this time strutting through the halls like he belonged there.
“Before long, it was obvious—this wasn’t just a foster home. This was his forever home,” Vlasova said.
Today, Choco is unrecognizable from the timid stray who once trembled in pain and fear. He’s goofy, energetic, endlessly loyal, and most importantly, he knows he’s safe and loved.
