Last year, Sophie Vershbow welcomed a temporary dog into her home and quickly knew the pup was something special. The 10-year-old dog, named Poppy by Vershbow, had spent years in a neglected shelter in Dallas, Texas, but she had a gentle, loving nature that made her perfect for anyone looking for a calm companion.

After spending just one day with Poppy, Sophie was certain she would make a wonderful companion for an older person. “She’s 10, moves slowly, and does her business right outside the house. We can enjoy our golden years together,” Sophie shared.
Poppy came into Sophie’s life a few months after being rescued from a Dallas shelter by Hearts & Bones, a foster-based rescue group. After spending time with her foster mom in New York City, who had to leave for a few weeks over the holidays, Poppy found herself in Sophie’s care temporarily.

Even though Poppy had to move homes again, her search for a permanent family didn’t stop. After all she had been through, this partially blind and deaf dog desperately needed a forever home. She arrived at Sophie’s with cloudy eyes, a chronic ear infection, skin issues, and several troubling lumps. She needed urgent medical attention to begin her recovery, but despite all her health challenges, Poppy’s resilient spirit shone through.

Sadly, potential adopters still didn’t seem interested. Sophie and Poppy’s foster family did everything they could to get her noticed. Sophie even took Poppy on winter walks in New York City wearing an “Adopt Me” tag. Despite sharing Poppy’s journey on social media, they didn’t get any adoption applications.
At one adoption event, Poppy lay quietly in her spot, watching other dogs leave with their new families. Sadly, people just walked past her without even stopping to say hello. “This is the moment I cried,” Sophie shared in a video on Instagram. “She deserves so much love and comfort and would be the perfect companion for anyone.”

Sophie wasn’t surprised by Poppy being overlooked. Older dogs like Poppy are often ignored because of their age and health problems. Still, Poppy’s rescue team never gave up on her. They kept posting pictures and videos of her, hoping someone would see her worth. Finally, their persistence paid off when a wonderful family decided to adopt her.

“I’m thrilled to share that Poppy has found her forever home!” Sophie wrote. “She’s off to live her golden years in Cape Cod with her new mom and dog siblings.”
After months of searching, Poppy finally has the home she deserves. Despite everything she’s been through, she’s just grateful to be loved. “Poppy is just happy to be here,” Sophie said.
