Judge Frank Caprio, Beloved for His Compassionate Justice, Passes Away at 88

Judge Frank Caprio, the longtime chief judge of Providence Municipal Court and beloved face of Caught in Providence, has passed away at the age of 88 after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Known around the world for his unique balance of fairness and compassion, he turned a simple courtroom into a place where justice and humanity walked hand in hand.

Born in Providence in 1936 to Italian immigrant parents, Caprio grew up with modest means but carried with him values of empathy and respect that would shape his life’s work. He supported himself as a teacher while pursuing his law degree, later serving on the Providence City Council before his appointment to the bench in 1985. For nearly forty years, he embodied the principle that justice should never lose sight of kindness.

Through his television program Caught in Providence, Caprio transformed everyday traffic cases into heartfelt stories that resonated far beyond Rhode Island. His decisions often went viral—whether he was forgiving fines, encouraging struggling families, or reminding people that everyone deserves dignity. His ability to see the human being behind the case made him a rare figure in modern justice.

Outside the courtroom, Caprio remained deeply committed to education. He established scholarships and worked tirelessly as chairman of Rhode Island’s higher education board, ensuring opportunities for future generations.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce, and their five children. While Judge Caprio may no longer be with us, the legacy he leaves behind is extraordinary—a reminder that justice is strongest when it is delivered with compassion and humanity.
