Heroic Firefighters Save Dog Trapped on Frozen Lake in Northern Alberta

A quick-thinking team of firefighters in Lac La Biche, Alberta, sprang into action to save a dog that had fallen through thin ice in a local park earlier this week.

The harrowing incident occurred on April 15 at Alexander Hamilton Park, when emergency crews received a call just before 5 p.m. about a stranded pup. Lac La Biche County Fire Rescue responded immediately, suiting up in specialized wet gear and using an ice rescue sled and tether ropes to carefully extract the dog from the freezing water.

Regional Fire Chief John Kokotilo praised the smooth operation, noting that while animal rescues can be unpredictable, this one was executed swiftly. “It’s very similar to rescuing a person, except animals aren’t always as cooperative,” he said. “Thankfully, this went perfectly.”

Kokotilo explained that such emergencies happen almost every year, particularly during early winter and spring when ice conditions are unstable. To stay prepared, Lac La Biche firefighters undergo annual ice rescue training, including refreshers for veterans and hands-on instruction for new recruits.

Thanks to their expertise, the team brought the dog safely to shore without injury—and the relieved pet was soon reunited with its overjoyed owner.

The County is using the close call as a reminder for residents to avoid walking on ice this time of year, especially as warmer temperatures weaken its stability. “Even if the ice looks solid, it can be dangerously thin,” officials warned. “Keep pets leashed and children supervised near any frozen water.”
