Joe Biden has spoken out publicly for the first time since learning he has a serious form of prostate cancer. In a heartfelt message on May 19, the former president thanked people for their kindness and support.
“Cancer affects everyone in some way,” Biden wrote in a social media post. “Jill and I have learned that even in tough times, love and support make us stronger.” He shared a smiling photo of himself with his wife, Jill, and their cat.
A day earlier, on May 18, Biden’s team revealed that the 82-year-old had been diagnosed with prostate cancer that has already spread to his bones. Doctors found the cancer on May 16 after he experienced issues while urinating. A growth, or “nodule,” was discovered on his prostate, prompting further tests.
Since the announcement, messages of encouragement have poured in from people across the political spectrum—including former presidents Donald Trump and Barack Obama.
Biden served as U.S. president from 2021 to 2025. He stepped away from the 2024 race following concerns about his age and health.
