A few months back, animal rescuer Audray Luck found herself overwhelmed with calls about a stray, pregnant dog seen roaming the woods. The dog had clearly been abandoned and was dangerously close to giving birth alone in the wild.
Understanding the urgency, Luck didn’t waste a moment. She teamed up with her rescue group, Luck’s Rescue, and set out to find the frightened mama. It wasn’t long before they spotted her — but approaching the dog proved to be a much bigger challenge.
“She was easy to find, but catching her was a whole different story,” Luck told The Dodo.
The scared pup darted through open fields, thick underbrush, and even across train tracks to avoid human contact. Despite Luck’s gentle efforts, the dog kept her distance.
“Every time I thought I was getting close, she vanished again,” Luck recalled. “I was really starting to panic. If she had her puppies out there in the cold, I didn’t think they’d make it.”
For nearly two hours, Luck patiently followed the dog, hoping to earn her trust. Slowly, the dog’s defenses began to drop. She cautiously accepted a few bites of food directly from Luck’s hand — a small breakthrough that gave Luck hope.
Then, a quiet miracle happened: the dog allowed Luck to pet her. “I literally held my breath when I touched her,” she said. “I was so scared she’d bolt again.”
But instead of fleeing, the dog wagged her tail — the first visible sign that she felt safe.
From that moment on, everything changed. The dog, now named Ginger, allowed herself to be gently picked up and taken to safety. She was brought to a loving foster home where she settled in almost immediately.
And just in time, too — within hours of arriving, Ginger gave birth to ten healthy puppies.
“She must’ve known she was finally safe,” said Luck. “That very night, she went into labor.”
Now, three months later, Ginger and her pups are thriving. The puppies have grown strong and playful, and Ginger has fully recovered from her time in the wild. All that’s left is for each of them to find a forever home of their own.
