Fred came home from university one day, eyes red and filled with tears.
“Mum,” he said quietly, “am I… adopted?”
His mother looked up, surprised. “What? Of course not! Why would you even think that?”
Fred pulled out a printed sheet and handed it to her. “I took one of those DNA ancestry tests. It didn’t match anyone in our family… but it shows close relatives across town I’ve never heard of.”
His mother’s face went pale. She stared at the paper in silence, then grabbed her phone and called her husband.
“Honey,” she said nervously, “Fred took a DNA test, and… I think he might not be our biological son.”
Her husband didn’t even hesitate. “Well yeah, obviously!”
She was stunned. “What are you talking about?”
He sighed and said, “You seriously don’t remember? That first night in the hospital—the baby wouldn’t stop crying, just screamed for hours.”
“You looked me dead in the eye and said, ‘Can you please change him?’”
“I did,” he said proudly. “And I’ve got to say—I think I picked a great one. Fred’s turned out fantastic.”
