In early March, on a quiet street in Surprise, Arizona, a little dog named Benji was heartlessly thrown from a moving car and left behind. Security cameras captured the shocking moment as he was pushed out, helplessly chasing the car as it sped away. Confused and heartbroken, Benji was alone — but his story was far from over.
While out for a walk, a kind-hearted passerby noticed Benji and immediately rushed to help. She scooped him up and brought him to the Surprise Police Department, where he quickly charmed everyone around him. His sweet demeanor and friendly nature won the hearts of the staff, and it wasn’t long before he was transferred to the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) for further care.
“Benji was such a love bug — he got along with everyone, whether it was the officers, men, or women in the department,” said Sergeant Rick Hernandez, public information officer for the Surprise Police Department. “He was all about the tail wags, belly rubs, and making everyone smile.”
Despite his tough start in life, Benji thrived in his new surroundings. Full of energy and playfulness, it was clear to everyone at AHS that this sweet pup was ready to find his forever family. After receiving his vaccinations, microchip, and neutering, Benji was all set for adoption. But he hadn’t been forgotten by the Surprise Police Department.
So strong was his bond with the department that one of the officers decided to officially adopt Benji. Now, this two-year-old Chihuahua is not just part of a family but an honorary member of the Surprise Police Department. He’s welcome to visit anytime, and the officers are excited to see what role he will play in their lives and the community.
“We’re really going to let Benji lead the way,” Hernandez said. “He’s going to be there to support our officers and bring joy to everyone he meets.”
Benji’s new family is dedicated to helping him become his best self. Steady Hand Dog Training, a local organization, is offering training sessions to help Benji continue to grow and thrive. He’s got a bright future ahead, surrounded by a loving team that’s excited to watch him flourish.
“It’s like a ‘bring your kids to work day’ — but for Benji, it’s ‘bring your dog to work day’ every day,” Hernandez added with a smile.
Benji’s journey, from being abandoned to becoming a cherished part of his new family, is a testament to the power of compassion and second chances.
